Dobbe

The pond located in a village green was the place where -back into history-
cattle drank water, and it was also used by the fire-brigade to fight fires.
In Dutch a pond like this is called a 'dobbe'. (photo 17Mar21)

Copper sign

The sign next to the memorial stone (see yesterday's post) says:
Died on November 23 MDCCLXXXIV.
Remembering that Jacobus Biben, reverend of this congregation
on his strong wish was buried here outside the church walls.

Memorial stone

A very old memorial stone, placed in the outer wall of the village church.
It is for reverend Jacobus Biben, who died in 1784. The text on the stone
is hard to read, but there is a copper sign next to it explaining it.
That will be in my blog post tomorrow  (photo 28Aug20)

Voting pencils

The red pencils that we used for giving our votes during this week's general elections
already appear to have become collector's items. Due to Covid-19 every individual
received his or her own pencil and was allowed to take it home afterwards; a unique
situation. Many are already for sale online.

Well, it might be a good idea to put ours in a safe and see what they're worth in
15 years or so... 😏         (photo 18Mar21)

Dutch elections

Yesterday, as well as the 2 days before that, the general elections took place in
the Netherlands to elect the members of the House of Representatives. Due to Covid-19 the
government decided to open some polling stations 2 days in advance to ensure safe voting
for elderly and people with medical high-risks. Citizens from 70 and older were also given
the chance to vote by post.
The Brinkhotel was one of the locations in Zuidlaren where people could vote.
The Dutch word 'stembureau' means 'polling place'. (photo 17Mar21)

Plastic bags to clean up after your dog can be taken from a street lamp

Penguins

This screenshot of a RTV Drenthe news article from last Tuesday March 2 tells about
the presence of mysterious penguins along highway N34 near Zuidlaren. The police
came to take them away as the penguins, made from wood, would distract passing
cars. The penguin on the photo was arrested according to a news update.

Later that same day it became clear that they were created by an artist from
Stadskanaal, who's only intention was to put a smile on people's faces. Well I guess
he succeeded! 😊The news article can be read HERE (in Dutch only)

CDP theme day: Mirrors

Each first day of the month is theme day at City Daily Photo. Today it's all about
mirrors. I chose this photo of a footbridge (and its mirror-like reflection) crossing
the Havenkanaal, near mill De Boezemvriend. (photo 24jan21)
