A common sight during the Summer months: oak trees that are marked for having
the oak processionary on them. These caterpillars do not just cause damage
to the oak by eating its leaves, they are also a human
irritant as their hairs can cause skin irritation and asthma. (photo 2Jul21)
That's an unusual warning.
ReplyDeleteGood grief! There are some nasty hairy caterpillars here in Texas, but not in such numbers that warnings need posting. I looked them up, and they do sound dreadful. Here's hoping all the BT treatments can reduce their numbers. I wonder if birds can even eat them. Maybe not, so usual predators might not be much help.
