Berend Botje

Berend Botje is a character from a well known 19th century Dutch children's song.
The lines tell about Berend Botje who went out sailing with his sailboat to Zuidlaren.
A replica of the sculpture can be found along the Stationsweg (see HERE) while
the original piece on the photo can be viewed in De Wachter mill museum.

Drentsche Aa

The wide terrace of restaurant De Drentsche Aa in Schipborg borders on the river
Drentsche Aa. We passed here on an evening bicycle ride, which was on a Monday
when they are usually closed, hence the upside down chairs. (photo 23Aug21)

Tin jars

A display of old tin jars inside the museum of the Wachter mill. One of the names
you can see on several of the jars is 'Koninklijke Verkade' ('Royal Verkade'),
known for its rusk, cookies, sweets, and chocolates. (photo 24Jul21)

Street organ

This photo was taken in the museum next to the Wachter mill. A volunteer, wearing
a face mask here, was happy to demonstrate the 'Tierelier', an old and small street organ.
And that was fun, as the tune it was playing was from the television series
Pippi Longstocking. (photo 24Jul21)

A beautiful area near Noordlaren called the Blanckenborg Estate. And whenever we pass

Ferry

At the north side the water of Lake Zuidlaren continues in a canal called Drentsche Diep.
There only way to cross it at this point is on foot or by bicycle, by means of a small ferry
that is manually operated by turning a wheel on the ferry. As you can see the ferry is
located on the other side when I took this photo.  (photo 2Aug21)

Ginger cookies

Behind mill De Wachter is a workshop where old skills are being
demonstrated by volunteers. This man shows how ginger cookies are made
in the old fashioned way: dough is being pressed into a mal on a wooden
'ginger cookie cutting board' where they come out in the shape of a mill.
The cookies lying in front of him are ready to be put into the oven.
They tasted really good! (photo 24Jul21)

Clog maker's craft

Another demonstration we watched in the workshop at De Wachter mill was the making of
wooden clogs. This is mainly done by hand, though a machine was used for making the hole
in which the feet go; a process that clearly required a lot of concentration and coordination
skills! (photo 24Jul21)

Grinding spices

During opening hours of mill De Wachter a number of volunteers are present
to tell you interesting mill facts and they are happy to answer all the questions you have.
This is the part of the mill where spices are grinded by small millstones.

Birds of Hope (1)

No less than 5,500 paper cranes have landed in the village church. They are part of the
'Birds of Hope'-project by artist Mathilde Leonore in collaboration with 'Plaats de Wereld'
a volunteer organisation focussing on education and inspiration. The majority of these
paper cranes symbolise hope and future for the youth in the Tynaarlo municipality, while the rest
stand for hope for children in refugee camps in the south of Europe. The church is open
for viewers on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. (photo 24Jul21)

Wheezy

A large number of signs, mailboxes, pavements, walls, utility boxes and other objects
within Zuidlaren were tagged recenty with the word ‘wheezy’. I took 5 photos of it to
create a small collage but there were many more. According to our local newspaper
the police caught the guy responsible and questioned him. His reasons became not clear.
